Gold Futures End Higher as Weekly Jobless Claims Climb to Record

Gold futures ended higher on Thursday, with the haven metal getting a boost on the heels of a climb in U.S. weekly jobless claims to a record 6.6 million. The move for gold followed four consecutive sessions of losses for the metal. June gold rose $46.30, or 2.9%, to settle at $1,637.70 an ounce. U.S. consumer confidence edged up to the best level in six months on an improvement in expectations, signaling that solid employment and cheap fuel are helping Americans look past concerns about the spread of the coronavirus.

The Conference Board™s reading increased to 130.7 from a downwardly revised 130.4 in January, according to data from the New York-based group Tuesday that fell short of estimates in Bloomberg™s survey of economists. The economic expectations measure climbed to a seven-month high that helped offset a drop in the present situation gauge falling to the lowest reading in eight months.
