Gold holds fourth straight monthly decline as investors assess outlook for U.S.-China trade war and before the Federal Reserve ends a policy meeting later Wednesday.

Bullion for immediate delivery edged 0.1% lower to $1,222.40/oz in London. Prices have swung between a gain and loss each day for past week. This metal declined 2.3% in July, posting longest stretch of monthly losses since 2013.

While there were reports that talks between Washington and Beijing were set to resume, they were quickly overtaken by a U.S. threat to raise tariffs, with China vowing to retaliate.

The ˜Fed is expected to keep interest rates unchanged, but focus will be on future stance, Kotak Commodity Services said in note. œRisk sentiment will also be affected by developments relating to U.S. and global trade policies.

In other precious metals, silver weakened 0.2% to $15.4944/oz, platinum fell 0.8% to $832.25/oz and palladium lost 0.3% to $931.98/oz.
