Prices also suffered in the wake of a global equity rout that raised concerns about the economy and the outlook for energy demand.

November West Texas Intermediate crude fell $2.20, or 3%, to settle at $70.97 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The global benchmark, Brent crude for December delivery on the ICE Europe exchange lost $2.83, or 3.4%, to $80.26 a barrel.
