Gold futures climbed sharply on Monday, extending their streak of gains to a third consecutive session. The euro rose to a three-month high against the dollar on Monday, as bearish bets on the U.S. currency remained solid on prospects of a near-term interest rate cut by the Federal Reserve. The euro stretched its rally last week, up 1.4%, and advanced about 0.15% to $1.1386 in early Asian trade, its highest since March 22. Crude-oil futures on Monday were little changed after finishing last week at a 17-month low, amid concerns about global crude output and fears of an economic slowdown internationally that may erode demand.

Oil trading on Nymex will settle at 1:30 p.m. Eastern Time, an hour earlier on the eve of Christmas, with global markets closed on Tuesday in observance of the holiday.

February West Texas Intermediate edged 10 cents, or 0.2%, lower to $45.49 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange, after booking a weekly loss of 11.4% last week, according to Dow Jones Market Data. The U.S. benchmark contract finished at the lowest for a front-month contract since July 12, 2017.

Meanwhile, February Brent the global benchmark, added a penny, or less than 0.1%, to reach $53.78 a barrel, following a 10.7% weekly downturn for the oil contract, marking its lowest settlement since September 8, 2017.

Both grades of crude are in a bear market, usually defined as a decline of at least 20% from a recent peak. WTI oil is down 40.5% from its recent peak on Oct. 3, while Brent is off about 38% from its recent October high.
