Hong Kong stocks opened lower Monday morning following a negative lead from Wall Street on fading hopes for a deep Federal Reserve interest rate cut. The Hang Seng Index eased 0.53 percent, or 153.12 points, to 28,612.28. But the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index edged up 0.05 percent, or 1.59 points, to 2,925.79 and the Shenzhen Composite Index, which tracks stocks on China's second exchange, added 0.14 percent, or 2.26 points, to 1,562.53. Oil prices inched up to settle just above one-week lows on Tuesday, as a downdraft ” prompted by President Donald Trump™s call for OPEC to help check rising crude prices ” faded.

On Tuesday, April West Texas Intermediate crude tacked on 2 cents, less than 0.05%, to settle at $55.50 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Global benchmark April Brent rose 45 cents, or 0.7%, to $65.21 a barrel on ICE Futures Europe. The contract dropped $2.36, or 3.5%, on Monday, the biggest one-day dollar and percentage decline year to date, according to Dow Jones Market Data.
