Tokyo stocks opened lower on Monday amid lingering geopolitical worries including the diplomatic fallout from the death of a Saudi journalist and ahead of corporate earnings report season. The Nikkei 225 index was off 0.66 per cent or 148.69 points at 22,383.39 in early trade, while the broader Topix index was down 0.72 per cent or 12.19 points at 1,680.66. AFP

The Australian dollar sank and Asian stocks looked set for declines after China on Saturday called off planned trade talks with U.S. officials.

The yen pared its initial advance Monday morning, with early moves lower fading for the Australian and New Zealand dollars following the latest development in the trade war. The U.S. and China are hours away from a new round of tariffs on each other™s goods.

The yen rose less than 0.1 percent to 112.54 per dollar as of 7:53 a.m. in Tokyo.

The Aussie dollar declined 0.2 percent to 72.74 U.S. cents.

The euro bought $1.1749.

Markets are closed in Japan, China and South Korea Monday and Treasuries won™t trade until the London open.
