Dollar Rises as Italian Budget Woes Weigh Down Euro
Friday, 19 October 2018 00:35 WIB | CURRENCIES |DOLLARDolar AS

The dollar gained as a drop in the offshore Chinese yuan damped risk appetite and concerns about Italy's budget weighed down the euro.

The Bloomberg dollar index was up 0.3%, with the greenback rising against most of its G-10 peers; gains in the index were also influenced by a sharp drop in the Mexican peso after U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to send the military to shut the border.

Italy's budget constitutes an 'obvious significant deviation' from European Union rules, according to a letter addressed to Italy Finance Minister Giovanni Tria from EU Commissioners Valdis Dombrovskis and Pierre Moscovici.

EUR/USD was down 0.3% and near a session low ~1.1468, lowest in more than a week.

GBP/USD was -0.5% and near a session low of 1.3049.

USD/JPY was -0.5% and near the session low of 112.08; EUR/JPY fell as much as 0.8% in risk-off trading.

The Australian dollar pared gains but remained 0.1% higher against the greenback, after an unexpected drop in the nation™s unemployment rate.
