Stocks put in a mixed performance in early trade Thursday as investors eyed uncertainty over progress in U.S.-China trade talks following a Bloomberg report that a meeting between President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping likely won't take place until at least next month.

The S&P 500 was off less than 0.1% at 2,810.04, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose less than a point to 25,703.46. The Nasdaq Composite fell less than 0.1% to 7,642.64.
