Tokyo stocks opened lower on Friday on worries over the US-China trade war as bellicose rhetoric persisted between Washington and Beijing, pushing the safe-haven yen higher against the dollar. Tokyo stocks opened lower on Tuesday as investors took to the sidelines ahead of key events including an EU summit and meeting of the European Central Bank tomorrow.

The benchmark Nikkei 225 index was down 0.08 percent or 16.93 points at 21,744.72 in early trade, while the broader Topix index was down 0.23 percent or 3.73 points at 1,616.41.
