U.S. stocks climbed modestly at the start of trade Tuesday, as investors parse a wave of corporate earnings, including those from blue-chip consumer-focused companies, Coca-Cola Co. and Procter & Gamble Co., which investors will pore over to glean the health of American corporations and the global consumer.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 36 points, or 0.1%, at 26,542, the S&P 500 index added 7 points, or 0.2%, at 2,915, while the Nasdaq Composite Index added 36 points to 8,051, a rise of 0.4%.
On Monday, the Dow fell 48.49 points, or 0.2%, to 26,511.05, while the S&P 500 rose 2.94 points, or 0.1%, to 2,907.97, and the Nasdaq gained 17.20 points, or 0.2%, to 8,015.27, its highest close since Oct. 3.
