Gold prices end lower on growing tensions between the U.S and China over Hong Kong

Gold futures ended lower Wednesday, but of session lows as tensions between the U.S. and China worsened after Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced that Hong Kong is no longer autonomous from China. Gold lost ground Wednesday, sliding below the psychologically important $1,700-an-ounce level as an ongoing stock-market rally in response to easing COVID-19 lockdowns robbed the yellow metal of its haven appeal. Gold for June delivery on Comex dropped $12.60, or 0.7%, to $1,693 an ounce, while July silver was off 13 cents, or 0.7% at $17.465 an ounce. European stocks opened mixed on Tuesday as Chinese negotiators arrived in Washington ahead of the signing of a long-awaited preliminary trade deal with the U.S.

The pan-European Stoxx 600 edged 0.1% below the flatline at the start of trading, with chemicals stocks falling 0.7% to lead losses while construction and materials eked out 0.2% gains.

The U.S. Treasury Department on Monday dropped its designation of China as a currency manipulator, an apparent gesture of good will as a Chinese delegation led by Vice Premier Liu He arrived ahead of the signing of the partial trade accord. The deal comes after more than 18 months of tit-for-tat tariff hikes between the world™s two largest economies.
