Gold Rises Back Near $1,800 as U.S. Dollar Softens to Start July's First Full Week

Gold futures headed higher early Monday, supported in part by a weakening U.S. dollar, which was providing a runway for the commodity even as global stocks rallied. The U.S. dollar was off 0.5%, as measured by the ICE U.S. Dollar Index, a gauge of the buck against a half-dozen currencies. A weaker U.S. dollar can make assets priced in the currency more attractive to buyers using other monetary units. Against that backdrop, August gold rose $4.30, or 0.2%, at $1,794.50 an ounce, after the...

Dow Closes 400 Points Lower After Bleak Economic Data Reflects Coronavirus Impact
Thursday, 16 April 2020 03:31 WIB | MARKET UPDATE |DOW JONESS & P 500SahamAS

U.S. stocks declined for the second time in three days following the release of March economic data that showed efforts to combat the coronavirus epidemic were taking a greater toll than feared.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 445 points, or 1.9% to close at about 23,507 and the S&P 500 index retreated 62 points, or 2.1% to end the session at roughly 2,783. The Nasdaq Composite index fell 123 points, or 1.4% to close near 8,393. The Commerce Department said that retail sales fell 8.7% in March, versus the 7.1% decline expected by economists in a MarketWatch poll, while the Federal Reserve said that industrial production also fell more than expected last month.

Efforts to stop the spread of COVID-19 did not begin in earnest in much of the country until late March, leading analysts to predict that the economic impact in April will be even more severe. In company news, Dow component UnitedHealth Group saw its shares rise 4.1% after it reaffirmed its 2020 earnings guidance, while shares of banks Citigroup and Bank of America fell 5.6% and 6.5%, respectively after each reported steep declines in profit and revenue during the first quarter.
