Japan Shares Fall as Topix Heads for Third Straight Yearly Gain
Tuesday, 30 December 2014 10:42 WIB | MARKET UPDATE |SahamIndeksTopix

Japanese shares fell on the last trading day of 2014, with the Topix index poised for its third straight annual advance, as consumer lenders retreated.

Orix Corp., which runs leasing and consumer-finance businesses, slumped 1.2 percent. Honda Motor Co. slid 1 percent after a report that the carmaker may miss its target for annual sales in Japan. Tosoh Corp., a petrochemical producer that closed at a seven-year high yesterday, sank the most on the Nikkei 225 Stock Average. Toray Industries Inc. jumped 3.7 percent after a report it will supply carbon-fiber materials to German carmaker Bayerische Motoren Werke AG.

The Topix slid 0.4 percent to 1,418.80 at the break in Tokyo, with volume about 31 percent lower than the 30-day intraday average. The measure is poised for a 9 percent gain this year. The Nikkei 225 sank 0.7 percent to 17,610.13, headed for an 8.1 percent annual increase. The yen climbed 0.1 percent to 120.50 per dollar.

The Topix’s gain in 2014 compares with a 13 percent rally for the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index and a 4.9 percent increase for the Stoxx Europe 600 Index. It hasn’t been a smooth progression. The Topix fell 9.1 percent through a February low, recovered through September and then tumbled again and entered a correction. The gauge has jumped 21 percent since Oct. 18.
