Gold Pulls Back From 2-Week High as $1,300 Mark Proves Elusive

Gold futures pulled back on Thursday from the nearly two-week high they settled at a day earlier, as the psychologically important $1,300 line remained elusive for another session. Gold for February delivery edged down by $1.50, or 0.1%, to settle at $1,292.30 an ounce. It settled Wednesday at an almost two-week high of $1,293.80, on the back of political turmoil in the U.K. and U.S. March silver also fell 10.2 cents, or 0.7%, to $15.536 an ounce on Thursday. Japanese stocks swung between gains and losses, with automakers leading gains as the yen fell and energy producers dropping on plunging crude oil prices.

Toyota Motor Corp. rose 2.4 percent, providing the biggest boost to the Topix index. Takata Corp. jumped 5.4 percent after lender Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group Inc. said it was ready to support the crisis-ridden auto air-bag maker if needed. Sony Corp. climbed 4.5 percent after announcing its movie ’The Interview’ generated a record amount in online sales and unveiling several new products at a trade show. Energy stocks continued to fall, with Japan Drilling Co. and JX Holdings Inc. sinking at least 0.8 percent. Ryohin Keikaku Co., operator of the Muji brand, tumbled 8 percent after reporting earnings.

The Topix rose 0.5 percent to 1,367.61 at the trading break in Tokyo after falling as much as 0.6 percent. The Nikkei 225 Stock Average added 0.5 percent to 16,974.61. The yen fell 0.7 percent to 119.16 per dollar after yesterday gaining 1 percent, the most in three weeks. Crude oil plunged yesterday and is down about 10 percent this year. U.S. stocks dropped after data showed the nation’s services industry expanded at the slowest pace in six months.
