The dollar held firm on Monday after data showed surprise strength in the U.S. jobs market, but the currency was restrained from moving higher by worries about an escalation in the U.S.-China trade war. Black Friday memberikan pengecer Inggris dorongan tak terduga menjelang periode perdagangan kunci Natal.

Volume barang yang dijual di toko dan online melonjak 1,4 persen pada bulan November, lonjakan terbesar dalam enam bulan, setelah dua bulan penurunan. Peningkatan hanya 0,3 persen diperkirakan dalam survei Bloomberg. Penjualan tidak termasuk bahan bakar otomatis naik 1,2 persen.

Kantor Statistik Nasional mengatakan peningkatan didorong oleh kenaikan 5,3 persen dalam penjualan barang-barang rumah tangga. Secara keseluruhan, penjualan non-makanan naik 2,2 persen; penjualan makanan tidak berubah.

Penjualan akan tumbuh pada kuartal keempat kecuali jika Desember mendapatkan penurunan bulanan sebesar 1 persen atau lebih.

Pertumbuhan penjualan tahunan berakselerasi menjadi 3,6 persen. Survei dilakukan antara 28 Oktober dan 24 November, periode yang mencakup Black Friday pada 23 November.

Penjualan online melebihi 20 persen dari total untuk pertama kalinya.

Data dapat membantu saham ritel, yang telah jatuh lebih dari 16 persen sejak akhir Oktober setelah peringatan perdagangan yang sulit dari perusahaan termasuk Sports Direct dan Asos.

Bank of England diperkirakan akan mempertahankan suku bunga tidak berubah hari ini dan mayoritas pedagang mengesampingkan kenaikan suku bunga sebelum Inggris meninggalkan Uni Eropa pada 29 Maret mendatang. (sdm)
