The dollar held firm on Monday after data showed surprise strength in the U.S. jobs market, but the currency was restrained from moving higher by worries about an escalation in the U.S.-China trade war. Gold futures headed higher Friday morning as weakness in the U.S. dollar helped to prop up the yellow metal ahead of a policy update from the Federal Reserve due in the middle of the week and a U.K. general election that could roil markets. Oil was little changed as investors weighed an expected drop in American crude stockpiles against the possibility of the U.S. imposing extra tariffs on a new $160 billion swath of Chinese goods this Sunday. West Texas Intermediate for January delivery was down 13 cents to $58.89/bbl on the New York Mercantile Exchange as of 7:45am Singapore time. Oil Rises on Tensions After Middle East Tanker Attacks

Oil prices rose on Monday after U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Washington will take all actions necessary to guarantee safe navigation in the Middle East, as tensions mounted following attacks on tankers last week.

Brent futures rose 27 cents, 0.4% to $62.28 a barrel by 0040 GMT. They rose 1.1% on Friday.

U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures were up 18 cents, or 0.4%, at $52.69 a barrel. They rose 0.4% in the previous session.

Prices had jumped as much as 4.5% on Thursday after the attacks on two oil tankers near Iran and the Strait of Hormuz.

It was the second time in a month tankers have been attacked in the world™s most important zone for oil supplies as tensions increase between the United States and Iran. Washington blamed Iran for Thursday™s attacks, prompting a denial and criticism from Tehran.
