Gold prices gained on Friday in Asia on rate cut expectations, but gains were capped by a rebound in U.S. stocks. Gold futures for August delivery, traded on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange, were up 0.4% at $1,348.95 per ounce by 01:15 AM ET (05:15 GMT). The U.S. Federal Reserve is expected to keep rates unchanged at its meeting on June 19, but markets believe the likelihood of a rate cut before the end of the year has increased due to slowing inflation and rising...

Gold Busts Above $1,350 as Iran Tension, Fed Outlook Spur Demand

US Blames Iran for Attacks on 2 Oil Tankers in Gulf of Oman

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is blaming Iran for Thursday's attacks on two oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman, off the Iranian coast. One of the tankers was set on fire and sent up smoke thick and black enough to be seen by satellites in space. Pompeo said the U.S. based its determination that Iran was behind the attacks on intelligence, the weapons used, and what he called the "level of expertise" needed to carry out such an operation. The secretary noted that Iran was behind other...

Gold pares gains on stronger dollar, posts a modest weekly decline

Gold futures pared much of their earlier gains Friday as a strength in the dollar dulled the dollar-denominated metal's appeal to investors. Prices still logged their highest settlement since last Friday. For the week, they fell by 0.1%, with the haven metal failing to get a significant boost on the back of tensions in the Middle East and Hong Kong. "The fact that gold has managed to trade over $1,340 is a positive sign for next week," said Chintan Karnani, chief market analyst at Insignia...

Bank of England leaves policy rate unchanged at 0.75% with unanimous vote as expected
Thursday, 2 May 2019 18:26 WIB | FISCAL & MONETARY |ekonomiBOE

In a widely expected decision, the Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee held the policy rate unchanged at 0.75% with a unanimous vote. The asset purchase facility remained steady at €435 billion as well. Below are some key takeaways from the monetary policy statement.

"Policymakers vote 9-0 to maintain corporate bond purchase target at 10 billion sterling."

"Q1 GDP likely boosted by stock-building, underlying growth "slightly stronger" than expected in February."

"Sees inflation increasingly above target at end of forecast horizon, economy running above capacity."

"Gradual and limited interest rate rises needed to meet inflation target over forecast period."

"Overall slack in economy is 0.25% of GDP, sees zero slack in 1 year's time, excess demand of 1% of GDP in 3 years' time."

"Energy price cap to push inflation above target in April, sterling strength and energy base effects to push CPI below target around 1-year horizon."

"Cost of waiting for more information on inflation pressure relatively low, pay growth levelling off."

"Policy response to Brexit not automatic, could be in either direction."

"Two thirds of firms surveyed say ready for a "no deal, no transition" Brexit, but still expect fall in output and jobs."

"Economic outlook will depend significantly on Brexit, BoE forecasts continue to assume smooth transition."

BOE Interest Rate Decision is announced by the Bank of England. If the BoE is hawkish about the inflationary outlook of the economy and raises the interest rates it is positive, or bullish, for the GBP. Likewise, if the BoE has a dovish view on the UK economy and keeps the ongoing interest rate, or cuts the interest rate it is seen as negative, or bearish.
