Gold prices inched up on Wednesday on expectations of a pause in U.S. interest rate hikes and as the dollar weakened against the pound after lawmakers voted down British Prime Minister Theresa May's deal to leave the European Union. Gold futures struggled for direction Wednesday as investors waved off turmoil surrounding the U.K.'s plan to leave the European Union and continued to pile into equities, depriving the yellow metal of haven-related demand. Gold for February delivery was up $2, or 0.2%, at $1,290.40 an ounce, while March silver was off 4 cents, or 0.3%, to $15.58 an ounce. Statement White House spokesman Jay Carney appeared a few hours after the acting president of Ukraine said the rebels shot down the plane with a missile propelled in the shoulder . He said 14 soldiers , including a general , died in an attack near the city Slovyansk , center of Ukraine clashes in the East .
 
Separately , Secretary of State John Kerry expressed concern to the Russian counterpart about the ongoing violence , and about reports that foreign fighters crossed into Ukraine from Russian territory .
 
Although the Kremlin has been weeks of protest, the Russian news agency , Ria Novosti , said 33 of about 50 rebel fighters were killed Sunday in Donetsk - in the battle against the forces of Ukraine - comes from Russia .
