Gold prices end lower on growing tensions between the U.S and China over Hong Kong

Gold futures ended lower Wednesday, but of session lows as tensions between the U.S. and China worsened after Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced that Hong Kong is no longer autonomous from China. Gold eases as equities rally; Hong Kong woes limit losses

Gold edged lower on Tuesday as hopes of economic recovery lifted share markets with many countries easing coronavirus-driven lockdowns, although Sino-U.S. tensions over Hong Kong limited bullion's losses. Spot gold was down 0.3% at $1,724.74 per ounce by 09:06 GMT. U.S. gold futures fell 0.6% to $1,725.10. Gold lost ground Wednesday, sliding below the psychologically important $1,700-an-ounce level as an ongoing stock-market rally in response to easing COVID-19 lockdowns robbed the yellow metal of its haven appeal. Gold for June delivery on Comex dropped $12.60, or 0.7%, to $1,693 an ounce, while July silver was off 13 cents, or 0.7% at $17.465 an ounce. Stocks open higher as earnings season gets underway

U.S. stocks opened higher on Tuesday as strong third-quarter results from the first raft of companies to report suggested the American consumer remains resilient.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average opened 117 points, 0.4%, higher, at 26,905. The S&P 500 rose more than 7 points at the open to start trading at 2,973, up 0.3%. The Nasdaq rose about 24 points or 0.3%, to 8,073. JPMorgan Chase & Co. one of the first companies to report on Tuesday, was 2% higher in morning trading, while shares of UnitedHealthGroup Inc. jumped more than 5%. Despite the healthy U.S. consumer sector, the IMF said Tuesday it sees global growth at 3% this year, the slowest since the 2008 financial crisis.
